According to Pajiba, the Charlie's Angels actress was once planning to star in the project, however she is now slated to direct.
The movie was announced in 2002, but pre-production was apparently stalled shortly after. Warner Brothers and Barrymore's Flower Films are now developing the film from an original script by Zach Helm.
The story centres on Dorothy Gale's great, great granddaughter who must learn to use the power of the ruby slippers to stop the Wicked Witch of the West from overtaking the Kingdom of Oz.
Another Oz sequel from producer Joe Roth is also in the works with Robert Downey Jr reportedly attached to star.
