According to Showbiz Spy, the Oscar winner told the film's director Michael Patrick King that she was devoted to the series and a fan of the first movie.
“Penelope said to me: ‘I’ve seen that first movie 15 times! I put it on when I want to feel happy and I put it on when I want to feel sad’,” King said.
He added: “Penelope is a devoted follower of those girls and Mr. Big, so when I needed a part I thought, ‘Who better to play that part than Penelope?’"
Sex And The City 2 opens May 27 in US cinemas.
