The Danish helmer's last film Antichrist featured graphic scenes of genital mutilation. However, Dunst said that she appreciates directors who push actors to their limits, explaining that her Spider-Man 3 co-star Bryce Dallas Howard had positive things to say about von Trier after working with him on Manderlay.
"Everyone who's worked with Lars, that I know, has really liked the experience," Dunst said in a roundtable interview with Premiere. "I think it's good to push your actors, that's what you want out of a director."
The actress described von Trier as "one of the great auteurs of our time", adding: "For me it's an incredible honour. [I'm] not worried. The last movie I did a lot, it was pretty heavy duty."
Alexander Skarsgård, Kiefer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Charlotte Rampling and John Hurt will also appear in Melancholia.
Dunst recently debuted her first short film Bastard at the Cannes Film Festival's Critics' Week.
