Binoche's 'Conforme' a "hymn to love"

Juliette Binoche has described her latest film Copie Conforme as a "hymn to love".

Speaking at the Cannes press conference for Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami's movie, Binoche explained that she enjoyed the "mystery" of her character, an unnamed gallery owner who pretends to be married to an English author (William Shimell) she has just met.

She said: "This character is extremely mysterious for me, I can't say who she is. Maybe this mystery is one of the things I like about her. Also in the encounter with the character played by William, through this encounter something emerges from her.

"Her femininity, her vulnerability but also her enormous strength and frustration. Everything a woman can feel and can be in her full complexity and the various different places which she occupies in herself: the pregnant woman, the mother, desperate woman, the married woman.

"All these aspects of what a woman can be thanks to a man and herself. It's a hymn to love, all about the difficulty of loving but for me the message is that there's always hope."
