According to The Hollywood Reporter, Webb has been meeting with actors to discuss filling the superhero role, although no filmed tests have taken place.
Bell, whose credits include Billy Elliot, King Kong and Defiance, is the most recognised actor on Webb's shortlist. Others in line for the coveted part include Andrew Garfield (Red Riding), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince), Josh Hutcherson (Journey To The Centre Of The Earth) and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro).
The revamped Spider-Man series will centre on a teen Peter Parker trying to cope with the death of his Uncle Ben.
Alvin Sergeant is currently writing the Spider-Man script, which Columbia Pictures hopes to put into production before the end of the year.
