Steven Spielberg's new blockbuster War of the Worlds got off to a terrific start on Wednesday, taking an impressive $21.2m (£11.9m) at the US box office and $34.6m (£19.5m) worldwide.
This represents the seventh biggest Wednesday gross ever, and the best opening day for both studio Paramount and star Tom Cruise, reports Empire Online.
War of the Worlds goes on general release in the UK today.
