The Minority Report actor is said to be close to signing up to play Dum Dum Dugan in the superhero feature. The character, whose real name is Timothy Aloysius Cadwallader Dugan, is a circus strongman-turned expert sniper who becomes a member of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Sebastian Stan and Hugo Weaving are already cast in director Joe Johnston's Captain America, which will open in cinemas in July 2011.
McDonough, whose credits also include Walking Tall and Star Trek: First Contact, was recently dismissed from ABC TV series Scoundrels after reportedly refusing to film sex scenes.
