Gary Oldman is eyeing the role of intelligence operative George Smiley in Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy, reports the Daily Mail.

The project, to be directed by Let The Right One In's Tomas Alfredson, is based on the character created by novelist John le Carré. A 1979 TV adaptation cast Sir Alec Guinness in the lead role.

Colin Firth, Michael Fassbender and David Thewlis are also said to be in discussions about filling roles as various intelligence heads and bureaucrats who the British government believe could be Russian spies.

Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon) wrote the screenplay for the Working Title-backed movie, which will go into production this September.
