The sequel will mark Bowers's first live-action film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Stars Zachary Gordon, Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris are expected to return for the follow-up to this year's minor hit, based on the book by Jeff Kinney.
Studio Fox is hoping to begin production on the project in August in Vancouver for a March 2011 release.
Bowers's previous films include Flushed Away and Astro Boy.
