The rumour that Jones would play US Army Colonel Chester Phillips has been substantiated by the studio.
The No Country For Old Men actor joins star Chris Evans and a cast including Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan and Stanley Tucci.
Phillips is responsible for recruiting Steve Rogers into the super soldier project that transforms him into Captain America.
The Joe Johnston-directed film will be released on July 22, 2011.
