A poll of over 6,000 people organised by the Old Vic Theatre in association with wine-makers Mouton Cadet saw the Oscar-winning take the lead in the lists, coming ahead of the likes of Laurence Olivier and Elizabeth Taylor.
The top ten actors were as follows:

5. Michael Caine
6. Richard Burton
7. David Jason

Meanwhile, the most acclaimed actresses were found to be:
