The Oscar winner joins an ensemble cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Stanley Tucci and Mary McDonnell, reports Deadline.
J.C. Chandor is directing the project, which follows the employees of a New York financial firm over a 24-hour period during the near collapse of Wall Street.
Irons will portray the firm's chief executive.
Production on the picture is scheduled to begin later this month.
Irons is well known for his award-winning turn in the 1990 drama Reversal of Fortune and for appearing in a number of other films including Lolita and Stealing Beauty.
