According to The Sun, the film sees Depp's character score a hit with a cover of an old song. He then embarks on a mission to find the record's original writer.
Depp, who recently starred in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, started out playing music when he left school, before turning to acting.
The star plays guitar and currently performs with British band Babybird. It was earlier reported that Depp turned down £5m to star in a Japanese advert so that he could play with the group.
The actor contributed to the Oasis song 'Fade In-Out', as well as to the soundtracks for Chocolat and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
