The Shutter Island actor said that the image of the identical Grady twins in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror film still haunts him to this day.
The 35-year-old said: "The twins in The Shining scare the crap out of me. They scare the living daylights out of me. I think that's one of the most powerful images in film, as far as terrifying is concerned."
The twins' appearance in the Jack Nicholson film was based on a famous 1967 Diane Arbus photograph of Cathleen and Colleen Wade in New Jersey.
DiCaprio's new movie, Inception, opens in the UK on July 16.
