Studio president Kevin Feige made comments regarding the recasting of the role for the Avengers movie, saying that they were looking for a "team player" to take on the role.
"This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light," said Brian Swardstrom of WME in an open letter to HitFix.
He said that Norton had met with director Joss Whedon and entered into "civil, uncontentious discussions" with Marvel before the studio pulled out.
"Counter to what Kevin [implied], Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his," said Swardstrom.
"Feige's statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton's talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel's fans."
