Brokeback Mountain won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday.
The film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, follows the story of a Wyoming ranch hand and a Texan rodeo cowboy falling in love in 1960s America. It is directed by Ang Lee, who shot to fame after directing the 2000 hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Critics had expected George Clooney's Good Night. And, Good Luck to win the Lion; however, Clooney did win the award for best screenplay and the film's lead actor, David Strathairn, won the award for best actor.
