According to The Daily Telegraph, the film will be based on a new book, Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century, written by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger.
The authors were given access to a set of love letters written by the star to her husband Richard Burton.
Mike Nichols, who directed both Taylor and Burton in the 1966 film Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, reportedly wants to make the biopic.
Contenders for the role of Burton include Russell Crowe, Clive Owen and Colin Farrell.
