According to SlashFilm, Burton will direct the DreamWorks project from a script being penned by collaborator John August (Big Fish, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride).
The movie will be released in 3D and feature humans battling giant monsters that have burrowed beneath the surface of the Earth with giant robots.
Monsterpocalypse could arrive in cinemas in 2012.
