The movie, to be directed by Garfield's Peter Hewitt, is a '70s reworking of the Nativity story which sees a pregnant hippy Mary (Lott) visiting Bethlehem in Maryland with her boyfriend Joseph. The shocked residents immediately begin to prepare themselves for the Second Coming.
Adrien Brody is in talks to play Joseph, while Bette Midler will portray Eleanor, the innkeeper that takes in the couple. Sean Brosnan, son of ex-Bond star Pierce Brosnan, is also among the cast.
Stone has replaced Kim Cattrall as Mary's mother, while Sam Rockwell was previously attached to star as Joseph. The $10 million-budgeted project was initially going to feature Britney Spears in the lead role.
