Adam Shankman to direct 'Hairspray' film

New Line Cinema is making a movie adaptation of Broadway musical Hairspray, Variety reports.
Adam Shankman will direct and choreograph the production, and will be working with screenwriter Leslie Dixon and lyricist-composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the team behind the musical's score.
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are producing, whilst John Travolta is tipped to be starring as Edna Turnblad.
Production is due to begin early next year with a view to a summer 2007 release.
