The actress was tipped to star as Vesper Lynd in 2006 series reboot Casino Royale, but the role eventually went to Eva Green.
Jolie confirmed to The Vancouver Sun that she had turned down the part of a Bond girl, claiming that she told casting agents: "No, thank you, but I'd like to be Bond."
Regarding her leading role in new thriller Salt, Jolie added that the producers rang her up and said: "Maybe we've found your Bond."
Discussing the action film, Jolie said that she enjoys performing in more heavy work "but I also love entertaining and the simple pleasure of that, so I don't start to take everything too seriously".
The film's director Phillip Noyce has suggested that the movie could spark a new franchise, predicting that Jolie will return for a sequel "within a couple of years".
