Speaking to journalists at this year's Comic-Con, Kosinski suggested that audiences in the early '80s were not prepared for a film that dealt with virtual reality.
He explained: "I think conceptually this notion of a world where we have digital versions of ourselves that exist in an online space, in 1982, people didn't quite grasp that concept. It was literally a decade ahead of its time. Now the world has caught up with Tron so now it's the right time to dive back in."
Kosinski said that he found it a "real honour" to be tasked with a reviving the franchise, which has amassed a cult following since the original movie's theatrical release.
"The bar was set high on many levels on the first film, how unique the vision was and how conceptually ahead of its time it was so we're trying to push the envelope the same way and really tell a story that hasn't been told until today," he said.
