Daniel Craig was today announced the sixth James Bond, coming out on top of big, and often unrealistic, names who have been previously mooted to be in the running such as Ioan Gruffudd, Clive Owen and even Pierce Brosnan. Digital Spy now takes a look at the relatively-unknown actor.
Born in Chester on March 2, 1968, Craig was brought up in Liverpool until, at 16, he moved to London to attend the National Youth Theatre before then progressing to the Gulidhall School of Music and Dance.
The actor's first appearance in film was in 1992's The Power of One. He subsequently landed a number of one-off parts in TV shows such as Heartbeat, Between The Lines and Drop the Dead Donkey before becoming more noticeable as Geordie Peacock in 1996 series Our Friends in the North.
Since then, Craig has appeared in higher-profile roles such as playing Ted Hughes to Gwyneth Palrow's Plath in Sylvia, featuring in Sam Mendes' Road to Perdition alongside Tom Hanks in 2002 and recent gangster movie Layer Cake.
He has recently finished work on Munich, Steven Spielberg's project focusing on the aftermath of the 1972 Olympics, where Palestinian terrorists killed eleven Israeli athletes. He is currently filming Have You Heard?, in which he plays the part of real-life killer Perry Smith.
For a matter of months Craig has been a rumoured contender to take the Bond role, at one point even fuelling rumours himself by trying to acquire a first edition of Casino Royale from a London bookshop. The night before the official announcement of his next role as the world's most famous super-spy, Craig's mother declared the news to the Liverpool Daily Post.
The sixth actor to play 007, his appointment will coincide with a new image for the character, more akin to his portrayal in Ian Fleming's novels than that in the movie franchise. He was quoted as saying before he took the role that he felt the character needed to be given more emotional depth and that the films need to be 'dirtier'. It seems likely that Craig will be pleased with director Martin Campbell's approach, who promised that Casino Royale would be "grittier, tougher and more realistic" than previous Bond movies.
On an extra-curricular note, Daniel is rumoured to be in a relationship with Sienna Miller, former belle of Jude Law, formerly a Bond contender himself.
Currently filming The Vanishing with Nicole Kidman, Craig can next be seen in Munich, which is slated for release next January as Casino Royale begins filming.
