Staunton will take the role of Professor Dolores Umbridge, the toad-like High Inquisitor of Hogwarts who has been assigned by a meddling Ministry of Magic to keep an eye on Dumbledore and ensure that Harry loses credibility within the Wizarding world.
A controversial character, she shows the darker side of Rowling’s work, portraying an interfering government and showing that following the rules is not always the same as doing the right thing.
Last year, Staunton received the Best Actress honours at the Venice Film Festival, the BAFTAs and the European Film Awards for her role in Vera Drake, as well as gaining nominations at the 2005 Golden Globes and Academy Awards.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is scheduled for a June, 2007 release.
