According to New York-based trainer Kenville John, the 35-year-old actress - whose dramatic weight loss sparked concern on set - was not fit enough to have been put through the challenging stunt work required for her role as a fugitive spy.
"This is a body that's breaking down," he told Us Weekly. "This has gone too far. I just don't think she possesses the physical strength to perform like that."
John also said that he considered Jolie to be "about 20% underweight" and branded Salt director Phillip Noyce as "out of his mind" to put her in action scenes where she could do considerable damage to herself.
He said: "For you to sustain something, a leap, a fall, the muscle has to be there to sustain the impact. Joints have to bend a certain way, and what supports joints? Muscle.
"Without it, joints would just crash into each other. It could be catastrophic - ligament tearing, broken bones, the worst."
It has been reported that Jolie became injured and collapsed during the filming of Salt, which opens in UK cinemas on August 20.
It was revealed this week that work will begin on a sequel within the next two years.
