Director Jerzy Skolimowski's Essential Killing tells the story of an Afghan man on the run in Europe and will also feature French actress Emanuelle Seigner, according to The AP.
Essential Killing will compete for the festival's top honour, the Golden Lion, which was won in previous years by Akira Kurosawa's 1950 thriller Rashomon, Louis Malles's 1980 drama Atlantic City and Samuel Maoz's 2009 war film Lebanon, among others.
The 67th annual Venice Film Festival will run from September 1 to September 11.
