The Hurt Locker star is apparently being considered for a key role in the next chapter of the series starring Tom Cruise.
According to Deadline, the movie's producers are looking for an actor who could potentially replace Cruise as the lead in future instalments of the franchise.
Renner will next be seen in the Ben Affleck-directed crime drama The Town. He also recently landed the role of Hawkeye in Marvel Studios' The Avengers.
Brad Bird is directing Mission: Impossible IV and J.J. Abrams is producing the picture, which begins production this fall for a December 2011 release.
