Kurtzman, who has worked with Spielberg to produce the The Island, Transformers and the upcoming Locke & Key TV series, has set up the drama at DreamWorks.
The script for Welcome To People was initially written in 2004 by Kurtzman, his writing partner Roberto Orci and documentary maker Jody Lambert. Kurtzman chose to make it his first film as a director to get away from his reputation as a science fiction and fantasy screenwriter.
Welcome To People centres on a man in his 20s who must deliver $150,000 to his alcoholic sister, as requested by their father in his will. The title refers to a child anger-management programme that the main character's troubled nephew is enrolled in.
