French director Alain Corneau has died at the age of 67.

The AP reports that the filmmaker, who gained international acclaim for 1991's Tous les Matins du Monde, passed away at his home overnight on Sunday after a battle with cancer.

Corneau worked with many of the most well-known French stars including Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu and Yves Montand over the course of his 35 years of moviemaking.

He began a career famous for thrillers after working as an assistant to Greek director Constantin Costa-Gavras on 1970's espionage tale The Confession.

According to AFP, Corneau's 1984 collaboration with Depardieu on the historical epic Fort Saganne broke the record for the biggest budget French film of the era.

The filmmaker's last movie Love Crime starred Ludvivine Sagnier and was released in French cinemas in mid-August.
