Mary J. Blige has agreed to portray late soul singer Nina Simone in an upcoming biopic from MTV Films and Paramount Pictures.
The part of Simone, who was renowned for her jazz ballads and protest songs, will be Blige's first starring role, having made her screen debut in Prison Song in 2001.
Not yet graced with a title, the movie will focus on the singer's relationship with manager Clifton Henderson, reports vh1.com.
No director has been attached to the project so far, though it has been confirmed that Cynthia Mort (Will & Grace; Roseanne) will write the screenplay.
Blige's new album, The Breakthrough, hits stores on December 20.
