Juliette Binoche has revealed that her award at the Cannes Film Festival is the acting prize that means the most to her.

The French star - who has also won 'Best Actress' gongs at the Berlin and Venice festivals, along with an Oscar and César prize - told DS that her recent Certified Copy honour at Cannes reminded her of the moment she was "born" as a screen actress.

"They belong to a different period of life," she said of the acting awards. "I have to say for Venice and Berlin I could not go there and it was a little frustrating. Cannes I could go there, it was nice also because I was born in Cannes with Rendez-vous, so that's before I was really taken by journalists because they saw my work [for the first time]. It was a nice circle after 25 years."

Of her Academy Award for Anthony Minghella's The English Patient, Binoche said: "The Oscars are so big in a sense that it's international, it's America, it's a whole deal of things. But at the same time I was so surprised by it, I didn't expect it - it was another journey."

Binoche's Certified Copy can be seen in UK cinemas from Friday.
