According to The Hollywood Reporter, the former pro wrestler will replace Brendan Fraser as the lead in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.
Josh Hutcherson will reprise the role of Sean Anderson from the first film in the Brad Peyton-directed follow-up.
Johnson will play the boyfriend of Sean's mother, who accompanies him on his voyage to find his missing grandfather.
The film, which will be shot in 3D, is loosely based on Jules Verne book The Mysterious Island.
