Ted Danson has boarded upcoming drama Everybody Loves Whales.

The Cheers star joins Vinessa Shaw in the picture as well as Kristen Bell, John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore.

The movie tells the true story of a news reporter (Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Barrymore) who try to save three gray whales trapped under ice in the Arctic Circle.

Danson will play an oil man who has no interest in saving the whales.

Ken Kwapis is directing the picture, based on the book Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World's Greatest Non-Event by Tom Rose.

Production is scheduled to begin this month in Alaska.
