According to Deadline, the $80 million Warner Bros project is in danger of collapsing because the studio are unsure about which actress to cast in place of Jolie.
The previously rumoured Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively have been confirmed as potential replacements for Jolie, while Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall and Olivia Wilde have all screen tested or been approached.
Robert Downey Jr. is still attached to the project in a supporting role.
Gravity, which Cuarón co-wrote with his son Jonas, is set on a remote space station and centres on a female astronaut's attempt to get home to her daughter after her crew is wiped out by falling debris.
The lead role is said to be similar to Tom Hanks's in Cast Away, focusing on the same character for the majority of the movie.
Gravity is due to begin production next year after Downey Jr. finishes filming on Sherlock Holmes 2.
