US Weekly quotes a source close to the film's co-director Robert Rodriguez as saying that he did not want Lohan to appear at the first US screening of the new thriller.
"He was frantically trying to track down her manager to make sure she didn't go," the source said.
The actress was released from a court-mandated rehab centre on August 22, but did not attend the Machete event on August 25.
The insider continued: "She wasn't welcome there."
A rep for the 20th Century Fox stated that the claim is "not true".
