Tom Cruise and James McAvoy are reportedly competing to star in Guillermo del Toro's new movie At The Mountains Of Madness.

According to Collider, studio Universal want McAvoy to lead the cast of the horror film, while director del Toro is keen for Cruise to take on the role of geologist William Dyer.

Cruise and del Toro had previously been working together on a Van Helsing project.

At The Mountains Of Madness, based on a novella from H.P. Lovecraft, centres on a group of scientists on an expedition to Antarctica discovering a chain of mountains that leads to the remains of uncharted life forms.

James Cameron is producing At The Mountains Of Madness, which will be del Toro's first 3D film.
