The mother and brother of Gabrielle Cedillo told Chicago TV station WBBM Channel 2 that the 24-year-old is now stable following an operation on Thursday afternoon, having originally been admitted to hospital in a critical condition the previous evening.
Cedillio, who works as a bank teller, sustained serious injuries while filming a car stunt on Wednesday, when a tow cable pulling her vehicle snapped and smashed through her windscreen.
Another extra who witnessed the incident described how the cable "whipped around... and sliced through her skull".
Representatives for DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures, the studios co-releasing the film, have not yet commented on the incident.
