DIY power of French riot movie
Published Wednesday, Dec 14 2005, 17:03 GMT | By Dave West
A film about last month's rioting in France made using DIY production programme The Movies has been praised.
Alex Chan made The French Democracy using the computer 'game' that allows anyone to create action sequences. His film simulated the scene that sparked the unrest in his country – the death of two youths being chased by the police. It went on to show scenes of the rioting itself.
Peter Molyneux, head of producers Lionhead, says Chan's work shows the potential of DIY film-making.
"With The Movies we wanted to make a game that allows anyone to easily express themselves by making a short film and posting them online to share with the world," he explained. "Alex’s film, which is absolutely terrific, really demonstrates the potential power and impact that these films can have."
Chan has also responded to his success. "I did not expect such a reaction to my little ‘home-made’ movie, but I have spread some human values that are important to me," said the 27-year-old.
"I'm very happy that The French Democracy has moved so many people, even if it is not always in a positive way. I'm very glad and proud that this movie may help people to think a bit more."
