James Cameron has admitted that being a perfectionist has caused him to earn notoriety as a stern director.

The Avatar filmmaker revealed that he had only ever lost his cool on set as he expects the best of his cast and crew.

Speaking to Shortlist, the 56-year-old said: "Look, I never single people out, but I can’t say that I worked on a movie for four-and-a-half years and never lost my temper. I demand excellence of myself, and I work really hard, and I expect everybody to keep up.

"When I put the team together to do the additional nine minutes for the Avatar re-release, everybody had big smiles on their faces."

Avatar: Special Edition is currently playing in cinemas.
