Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, Garfield joked that he has been preparing for the role since he was a young child.
"I feel like I’ve been preparing for it for a while," he said. "Ever since Halloween when I was 4-years-old and I wore my first Spider-Man costume."
The actor stated that the superhero touches the lives of so many boys because he seeks to right the world's injustices.
He explained: "Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice, God, it’s just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure."
Garfield also noted that being chosen to portray one of Marvel Comics's most iconic characters is one of his life's great honours.
"It’s a true f**king honour to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol and it’s meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people."
The Spider-Man reboot will reportedly debut in US cinemas in 2012.
