The artistic director of the London Film Festival (LFF) has praised the "real breadth and creativity" of the British movies in this year's lineup.

Speaking at the event's launch at the Leicester Square Odeon, Sandra Hebron agreed with British Film Institute director Amanda Nevill that there is "some turbulence" in the UK film industry at present.

Hebron said: "So, it's time to recognise the real breadth and creativity that the British films selected bring to this year's programme.

"It's a real cause for celebration that our opening night and closing night galas are both British films."

She added: "Very different though they are from each other, Never Let Me Go and 127 Hours are both films with real imagination and great originality.

"And these are characteristics that really carry through to the rest of the British selection, shorts and features alike."
