According to Variety, the Watchmen star joins Ethan Hawke in the film.
The movie centres on a fallen black ops agent (Hawke) and a young woman (Akerman) who he has to protect in the middle of the Nevada desert.
Kasper Barfoed is directing the project from a script by F. Scott Frazier.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2011.
