The man has been spotted appearing on red carpets accompanied by a "massive entourage of scantily clad female groupies", reports New York magazine.
Casey Affleck, who directed the Phoenix documentary I'm Still Here, apparently plans to make an announcement about the impersonator tomorrow night before the film's premiere.
Affleck previously denied that his documentary about Phoenix is an elaborate hoax.
