The Voltage Pictures movie tells the story of a brother and sister who hire a contract killer to bump off their mother in order to get their hands on the insurance money.
Hirsch is to play the scheming brother, while McConaughey will star in the title role of "Killer Joe" Cooper, who doubles as a police officer during the day, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
William Friedkin will direct the picture, and Tracy Letts has penned the script. Filming is due to start in New Orleans in November.
