US library preserves ‘Toy Story’

Toy Story has been picked as a movie deserving preservation by the US Library of Congress.

The National Film Registry adds 25 productions to its collection each year, aiming to preserve America’s cultural gems.

Among those chosen this year are also erotic sci-fi comedy The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Cameraman and teen comedy Fast Times At Ridgemount High.

"The films we choose are not necessarily the 'best' American films ever made or the most famous,??? explained Congress librarian James H Billington. “They are films that continue to have cultural, historical or aesthetic significance."

He added that about half of the movies made in the US before 1950 and up to 90% of those from before 1920 have been lost already. "Sadly,??? he commented, “our enthusiasm for watching films has proved far greater than our commitment to preserving them."
