Carey Mulligan has admitted that she found her role in director Oliver Stone's new film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps "intimidating".

The star told The Boston Herald that she agreed to appear in the big-budget production because she wanted to challenge Hollywood's perception of the "girlfriend" role.

"I wanted to do it because it was slightly intimidating," she said. "The challenge in my mind was, 'Try to make the girlfriend in a Hollywood film relevant'. A lot of the times through no fault of the actress these parts get kind of marginalised, and I thought that there was something real there."

She also described the film's production as "daunting" because she was chosen specifically by Stone for the role without having to audition.

"I'd been so used to doing two or three auditions and waiting and waiting for the phone to ring. It was sort of weird," she said.

"You get on set and you feel that you've got to be doubly, extra good because you've got to prove that they haven't made some horrible mistake."

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is now playing in US cinemas.
