Brenda Chapman will become the first woman to direct a film for Pixar when she begins work on the upcoming 3D animated film Brave, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Chapman also became the first woman ever to direct an animated film from one of the major studios back in 1998 when she helmed DreamWorks production The Prince Of Egypt.

Brave revolves around a young royal girl named Mérida who wants to become an archer but accidentally endangers her kingdom in the process.

A number of big-name actors are attached to star in the animation, including Reese Witherspoon, Julie Walters and Billy Connolly.

Brave is scheduled to be released in cinemas in June 2012.
