IGN claims that distributor Warner Bros. was keen for Affleck to follow his recent success with The Town.
The film, which Affleck both directed and starred in, received widespread critical and commercial acclaim, prompting Warner Bros. to approach him about its Superman reboot.
However, The Hollywood Reporter has now claimed that Affleck is no longer pursuing the role as a possibility.
There has been much recent speculation over who will direct the Christopher Nolan-produced reboot, with names including Zack Snyder, Tony Scott and Darren Aronofsky thought to be in the frame.
