Aronofsky to direct 'Preacher' film?

Created by Garth Ennis, Preacher was published between 1995 and 2000 as part of the DC Comics mature imprint Vertigo.
The series focuses on a Texan preacher named Jesse Custer who becomes possessed by a powerful demon and must travel across America to find God as a result.
Sam Mendes was said to be initially attached to the project but left after agreeing to helm the next Bond film, following which producer Neal Moritz confirmed that he was in contact with another director.
Aronofsky was also recently tipped to be on the shortlist for producer Christopher Nolan's reboot of the Superman film series.
However, due to the expected production dates for both the Preacher adaptation and the Superman reboot, it is thought that Aronofsky would be unable to helm both films.
Preacher is scheduled to begin production in 2011 with a script written by frequent Tim Burton collaborator John August.
