The actress, who plays Sandra in the movie, admitted to DS that she was previously unaware of the seamstresses whose actions eventually led to women winning the legal right to equal pay.
Winstone said: "I knew about Dagenham Motors and the whole factory. I didn't know that these women went on strike and I didn't realise it was the first women's strike.
"I didn't realise that they changed the Equal Pay Act either, so I was pretty blown away when I first read the script and discovered that."
She added that while she later looked into the history of the workers, she kept her research at "arm's length" because at the time of their strike, the women were "blissfully unaware" of the future impact they would have.
